Title A Trailer

1. At your local County Treasurer’s Office, and you will be requesting a “Trailer VIN Assignment Number“. This is form #MV39T. This is a form that assigns a VIN number under your name. You will state the trailer is homemade, flatbed raft trailer, weighing approx. 600lbs. They are going to charge you $5 for this form.

2. The trailer will need the VIN stamped. We offer to stamp the VIN onto a brass badge and attach it free of charge. If you get your VIN after the purchase of the trailer, we can mail a stamped badge.

3. Once the trailer has the VIN badge attached, the form #MV39T needs to be signed off by any law enforcement officer. Police, Sherriff Deputy, or FWP. The easiest way to do this is to call the non-emergency line for the Sherriff’s Department and request an officer come “verify a trailer VIN #“. The officer will verify the VIN # stamped matches the form, and sign off on the form.

4. Take this completed form to the County Treasurer’s Office and at that time they will issue you a permanent trailer plate for the trailer in the state of Montana.
